A joint statement
JOINT STATEMENT OF LGBTQIA+ ORGANIZATIONS ON THE BRUTAL KILLING OF KHALEED “KHAY” ABDULGAJIR
We, the LGBTQIA+ organizations, strongly condemn the brutal murder of Khaleed “Khay” Abdulgajir, a senior high school student of Integrated Laboratory School of Mindanao State University Tawi-Tawi College of Technology and Oceanography (MSU-TCTO).
While we commemorate today the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT), we express grief over the killing of Khay. We are committed to stand up against numerous human rights violations, including gender-based violence and killings.
We urge the authorities, especially the Philippine National Police and Local Government Unit of Tawi-Tawi, the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao, and the Commission of Human Rights to ensure effective redress measures. In particular, we call for an immediate investigation to ascertain the truth behind the incident, to hold the perpetrators accountable, and to ensure that justice is achieved. We urge the government to provide needed assistance to the family and loved ones of Khay as they face this time of difficulty.
JUSTICE MUST BE SERVED! This incident is just one of the many miserable realities we face in the LGBTQIA+ community. Our country is still plagued by LGBTQIA+ hate that has roots in its colonial past. A twisted heritage that we simply refuse to acknowledge or shake off and have misguidedly embraced. We remain vigilant for the rights of all individuals in times when our country faces human rights attacks.
